CLAREMONT, CA — Rachael Dela Cruz won a SCIAC title in the 3000m steeplechase, Elizabeth Prevedello added a podium finish of her own, and the University of La Verne women's track and field team had a solid start to the 2019 SCIAC Track and Field Championships.
Dela Cruz, who entered the steeplechase seeded third, jumped in front of the competition with three laps to go and held on for the first SCIAC Championship in her career. The senior ran a personal best 11:12.02 to claim the title. The time is the third fastest in La Verne history. Dela Cruz continues the Leopards' dominance in the event; a La Verne runner has finished in the top two in each of the last four years including three titles.
Prevedello added a third place finish in her first appearance at the SCIAC Championships. The junior took third in the long jump with a leap of 18-03.00 (5.56m).
All track events on Saturday were preliminaries with the exception of the 3000m steeplechase and 10,000m run.
Jade Griffin will enter Sunday seeded second in the 200m after running a 25.19 in prelims and third in the 400m dash after clocking in at 59.14 on Saturday.
The Leopards continue the SCIAC Championships tomorrow with field events beginning at 2 p.m. and track events beginning at 3:30 p.m.Watch Live Follow ULV Athletics on Twitter Like us on Facebook Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
