CLAREMONT, Calif. — TJ Randall won the shot put and the La Verne men's track and field team turned in a handful of All-SCIAC performances as it finished third overall at the 2017 SCIAC Championshps, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer.

Randall recorded the winning throw of 15.07 meters on his fourth try and registered a persoal record heave of 15.57m (51 feet, 1 inch) on his final attempt to an icing on the cake. Chris Gura took second with a toss of 14.87m (48-09.50).
The Leopards took the silver and the bronze in the javelin. Jesus Payan unleashed a personal record throw of 52.75m (173-01) on his second attempt to take second and Michael Burciaga-Ellis finished right behind with a throw of 51.83m (170-00), also a personal record.
Payan had another podium finish in the 400m hurdles where he finished third with a time of 55.43, another personal record.
Joshua Francis recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 200m and the 400m. The junior finished the 200m at 21.63 seconds and the 400m at 48.26.
The 4x400m relay team of Patrick Cornwell, Payan, Jeffrey Ouk and Francis combined to go 3:18.49 and finished third. The 4x100m (Hunter Powers, Austin Warrington, Trevor Welch, Francis), which has been a strong event for the Leopards in recent years, just missed out on the podium and came in fourth at 42.29.
A select group of Leopards will continue to compete over the next two weeks to improve their marks for national championship qualification, starting with Claremont Classic Multis on Thursday.
