CLAREMONT — Nick Gonsalves broke a 14-year old school record in the 100-meter dash and the University of La Verne men's and women's track and field teams had a good showing in their first SCIAC meet on Saturday. The women came out victorious against both Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Occidenta. The men took a loss to CMS, but beat Oxy to go 1-1.
Gonsalves took first place in the 100m with a time of 10.72 seconds, shaving one-one hundredth of a second off the school record Anthony Rice set back in 1997. It's early, but Gonsalves' time is currently the fastest in the NCAA Division III by 0.18 seconds.
Chancise Watkins and Gonsalves finished 1-2 in the 200m. Watkins ran a time of 21.46 seconds and Gonsalves finished in 22.19 seconds. Watkins also took first in the 400m with a time of 48.52 seconds.
The field events started the Leos off with a first place finish in the javelin from Matthew Rehder with a throw of 183-09 (56.01m).
In the triple jump, both Jacob Lopez and James Frances performed well. Lopez finished first with a jump of 44-11.50 (13.70m) while Frances finished third jumping 42-10.75 (13.07m). Frances came up big with a second place finish in the high jump, leaping a 6-02.75 (1.90m).
Freshman Jason Nicholls had a great performance in the pole vault and in the discuss throw. Nicholls vaulted a 15-01.00 (4.60m) to claim first place in the event. He collected another first place finish in the discus throw with a 136-06 (41.62m).
Michael Ramirez took 1st in the 800m running a time of 1:55.9. Tanner Long had a long race ahead of him but managed to run for his team and took 3rd in the 1500 meter run (4:00.62)
The men's 4x400 relay team ran an exciting race taking 1st with a time of 3:19.40, beating out Oxy and CMS.
The women had a great start and a great finish to set the tempo for the rest of their season. The women's 4x100 relay team and the 4x400 relay team both finished 1st. The Leos ran a time of 49.19 seconds in the 4x100 and ran a time of 4:03.50 in the 4x400.
Nicole Crutchfield and Tiahna Gillon both teamed up to clinch first and second place spots in the 100-meter dash. Crutchfield sprinted a time of 12.58 seconds and Gillon posted a time of 12.65 seconds. Olga Saldivar won the 800m with a time of 2:23.33.
Lenore Moreno, who is set to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships next weekend, ran focused and finished strong in the 1500 meter run with a winning time of 4:36.51.
The Leopards registered top performances in the field events as well, starting with high jumper Abbrieanna Reyna. Reyna jumped 4-11.00 (1.50m) to take 1st place. Vaulters Katie Yeager and Taylor Bernhard took 1st and 2nd place in the pole vault. Yeager vaulted 11-05.75 (3.50m) and Bernhard vaulted 10-11.75 (3.35m).
Long jumper Lindsey Foster jumped 17-00.75 (5.20m) taking 2nd place.
Deanna Doss continued the great performances for the women's field events. Doss finished first in the discus throw (123-01, 37.51m) and the hammer throw (166-05, 50.72m), and had a strong showing in the shot put (37-06.00, 11.43m) as well. Jaclyn Castleberry finished right behind Doss in the discus with a mark of 122-11 (37.47m)
