INDIANAPOLIS — The University of La Verne men's golf team has earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Championships the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee announced Monday afternoon.
The championships will be held May 15-18 at Grandover Resort, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will be hosted by Guilford College and the Greensboro Sports Commission.
"We're all extremely excited," said La Verne Golf Head Coach Eric Riehle. "We were getting ready to head out to practice when we heard the news."
The Leopards were selected as one of nine at-large teams to play in the championships. A total of 42 teams and six individuals will compete in North Carolina. The Leopards will send five golfers to the tournament with the top four scores in each round counting towards the team total, differing from SCIAC competition which plays six and scores five.
La Verne finished second in the SCIAC standings and took fourth at the SCIAC Championships. Three Leopards earned All-SCIAC honors led by SCIAC Athlete of the Year Hisham Hussein. Freshman Pitiluk Phanomchai was named SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and Conner Davis earned Second Team All-SCIAC honors. Both Hussein and Phanomchai were named First Team All-SCIAC as well.
This is the first time since 2015 the La Verne men's golf team will play in the championships. Kelby Scharmann led the Leopards that season winning the program's first individual NCAA National Championship. Alec Spencer competed as an individual last season.
"We're playing the best golf we've had all season," said Riehle "It feels like there's something special about this team, we'll be ready for the competition."
The Leopards will announce their five golfers in the upcoming days.Follow ULV Athletics on Twitter Like us on Facebook Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
