PASADENA — Kelby Scharmann of the University of La Verne men's golf team was named the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week of May 11-17 as voted by the conference's sports information directors. It is his second SCIAC Athlete of the Week nod in three weeks.
Scharmann shot a four-round score of nine-under 279 to claim La Verne's first-ever individual medalist honors at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., and earned the Arnold Palmer Individual National Champion Award.
Scharmann was trailing Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe by three shots with five holes to go, but went eagle-par-birdie-birdie to win the national championship. He was also named a GCAA First Team All-American at the tournament's conclusion.
