LA VERNE, Calif. — La Verne wide receiver Alex Arellano was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after a monster performance in the Leopards' 38-21 win over Cal Lutheran.
The junior from Chino exploded for 223 yards and two touchdowns on 18 receptions to help the Leopards win the 2015 SCIAC Football Championship outright. He ripped off big chunks of yards on screen plays and burned the Kingsmen secondary on several occasions. He opened the scoring with a four-yard reception on the first drive of the game and hauled in a 37-yard score to close out the first half.
It has been a breakout season for Arellano, who came into the season with 22 catches for 168 yards and zero touchdowns. He flashed potential in the season-opener against George Fox when he scored a 66-yard touchdown in the first quarter and has been a nightmare for the opposing secondaries ever since. He scored at least a touchdown in seven games and finished the season with two multi-touchdown games. He's currently sitting at 791 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 58 receptions.
This is the third D3football.com Team of the Week honor the Leopards have received this season. Travis Sparks-Jackson was honored for a 210-yard, four-touchdown effort at Occidental in Week 5 and the offensive line received the award in Week 9 after paving the way for 421 rushing yards and seven touchdowns against Chapman.
La Verne travels to St. Thomas (Minn.) on Saturday for the first round of the NCAA Football Championship.
