LA VERNE, CA — Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, senior Christopher Peres stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and delivered, hitting in Tanner Browning to give the University of La Verne baseball team a 3-2 win over the Drew University Rangers Thursday afternoon.
The Leopards win their third straight game and improve to 10-5 overall. Drew falls to 3-4.
Browning led off the inning with his fourth hit of the game, singling to right field to put the winning run on base. Christopher Ligot stepped up next and moved Browning over ninety feet with a sacrifice bunt.
After Tanner Siffert walked and Adam Santa Cruz loaded the base with an intentional walk, Peres stepped into the box ready to play the hero. The senior hit a hard shot to third base that Drew's Eric DiPietro couldn't handle and sent Browning across the plate for the win.
Browning led the Leopards offensively, finishing 4-5 at the plate with a double and a pair of runs. The junior gave the Leopards a 2-0 lead in the second inning when he singled to left to bring in Jacob Benson.
Peres also had an outstanding game at the plate with a 4-5 batting performance to go with the game-winning RBI.
Benson scored once and added a pair of hits including a double. Santa Cruz drew a pair of walks and Ligot notched a double.
Siffert gave the Leopards the opening 1-0 lead in the first inning when he singled in Benson.
Drew got on the board in the third inning following a Max Felsenstein RBI and tied it the next inning with a Joe Grossane RBI single.
Devon Burhans was stellar in four and two-thirds innings of relief, striking out three off just two hits and no runs to pick up his second win of the season.
