Baseball falls to Redlands, 6-3

REDLANDS, Calif. — The University of La Verne baseball team dropped the second game of SCIAC Round Robin Pool Play at Redlands, 6-3, in a rain-shortened game at the Yard on Saturday afternoon.

La Verne and Redlands both sit at 18-8 in SCIAC play and are tied for third-place in the SCIAC standings. Pomona-Pitzer beat Chapman to take sole possession of first at 19-7 and Cal Lutheran is in second at 18-7. Cal Lutheran's game against Occidental was suspended until Monday due to rain.

The Bulldogs tagged a La Verne staff that had sported a 2.52 ERA over the previous nine games for six runs on 11 hits in seven innings. The Leopards were held to just four hits.

La Verne starter Brett Early (7-2) gave up six runs in 5.1 innings and Alex Bernstein tossed 1.2 scoreless innings.

Matthew Acosta (7-4) earned the win for Redlands after giving up two earned runs in 5.2 innings.

The Leopards briefly took a lead in the fourth. After Jakob Thomas doubled and Mark Jebbia drew a walk to start the inning, Woody Reyes singled up the middle to score Thomas and Jebbia came around to score on an error by the third baseman to give the Leopards a 3-2 lead.

But the Bulldogs answered with four runs in the next two innings and kept the Leopards at bay the rest of the way.

La Verne returns to action with a pair of games at Ben Hines Field on Sunday. The Leopards take on Occidental at 11 a.m. and Whittier at 3 p.m.
