Baseball routs Caltech in home opener, 12-1

LA VERNE, Calif. — Four pitchers combined to throw a one-run game and 10 players recorded at least a hit as the University of La Verne baseball team beat Caltech, 12-1, in eight innings at Ben Hines Field on Friday evening.

La Verne books its first SCIAC win of the season and improves to 2-3 on the season. Caltech falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC.

Ben White went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, and Tyler Watkins and Jakob Thomas each had two hits for the Leopards.

Alex Bernstein (1-0) got the start for the Leopards and pitched four score less innings to pick up his first win of the season. La Verne also got a strong performance from David McKeller, who relieved Bernstein in the fifth inning and pitched three shutout innings.

La Verne jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning. After a leadoff out, Woody Reyes doubled down the left field line and came around to score when Caltech first baseman David Watson dropped a routine throw from the second baseman. White and Thomas followed with RBI triples to give the Leopards a 3-0 lead.

The Leopards added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Reyes and tacked on another in the sixth with a Matt Caselli RBI single.

La Verne poured seven more runs in the next two innings to wrap up the game early. In the seventh, Tyler Watkins smacked a two-out single to score Nolan Henley and Caselli pushed across another run with a bases-loaded walk.

With Caltech staff running out of gas in the eighth, the Leopards loaded the bases with two hit batsmen and a walk. Pinch hitter Ashton Edior followed with a towering double down the left field line to score two and Andrew Douglas knocked on in with a shallow sacrifice fly to right to give the Leopards a 9-1 lead. Needing one more run to invoke the run-rule, Mark Abbate sealed the deal for La Verne with a two-run single to left.

The Beavers scored their lone run in the eighth with Tim Menninger's RBI triple.

Derek Kearney (0-2) allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings in start, but was tagged with the loss.

La Verne travels to Pasadena tomorrow for a doubleheader against the Beavers. First game starts at 11 a.m.
