La Verne Competes In CLU Spring Classic
Last weekend, the Leopards headed up to Thousand Oaks to
participate in the 2010 California Lutheran University Spring
Classic, but fell to Division I Villanova (14-7), Division II
opponents CSU East Bay (19-9) and CSU Monterey Bay (12-6) and NAIA
powerhouse Fresno Pacific University (11-2).
The Leopards kicked off their tournament with a match against the
Sunbirds from FPU. La Verne was held scoreless in the first half,
but only allowed 4 goals. Liz Roberts and Anjuli Palos De La Rosa
scored their first goals of the tournament in the second half, but
the Leopards would fall 11-2.
La Verne's second game was against CSU Monterey Bay and Palos De
La Rosa and Diane Aguayo contributed 2 goals each, giving the
Leopards a 4-2 lead after two quarters. Roberts scored in the third
and fourth period, but the Otters rattled off 10 goals to take a
12-6 victory.
On Sunday, the Leos started with an 8:30 am contest against CSU
East Bay. Roberts did her best to keep La Verne in the game by
scoring 6 for the Leopards, while Aguayo added 3. But East Bay was
able to hand the Leopards a 19-9 loss.
The Leopards concluded their tournament with a match against the
Division I Wildcats. Roberts contributed another 6-goal
performance, and sophomore Ashley Forsberg scored her first goal of
the tournament to give La Verne 7 total points. However, Villanova
won 14-7.
Roberts concluded the tournament with 15 total goals. Aguayo
finished with 5 total goals. Goalie Lauren Shepard tallied 31 saves
in four games.
La Verne will head to the city of Orange to participate in the
second Chapman Tournament this upcoming weekend, where they will
take on Wheaton (Ill.), Chatham, Chapman and Carthage. The Leopards
will begin tournament play at 11:00 am against Wheaton.
