La Verne Competes In CLU Spring Classic

Last weekend, the Leopards headed up to Thousand Oaks to participate in the 2010 California Lutheran University Spring Classic, but fell to Division I Villanova (14-7), Division II opponents CSU East Bay (19-9) and CSU Monterey Bay (12-6) and NAIA powerhouse Fresno Pacific University (11-2).

The Leopards kicked off their tournament with a match against the Sunbirds from FPU. La Verne was held scoreless in the first half, but only allowed 4 goals. Liz Roberts and Anjuli Palos De La Rosa scored their first goals of the tournament in the second half, but the Leopards would fall 11-2.

La Verne's second game was against CSU Monterey Bay and Palos De La Rosa and Diane Aguayo contributed 2 goals each, giving the Leopards a 4-2 lead after two quarters. Roberts scored in the third and fourth period, but the Otters rattled off 10 goals to take a 12-6 victory.

On Sunday, the Leos started with an 8:30 am contest against CSU East Bay. Roberts did her best to keep La Verne in the game by scoring 6 for the Leopards, while Aguayo added 3. But East Bay was able to hand the Leopards a 19-9 loss.

The Leopards concluded their tournament with a match against the Division I Wildcats. Roberts contributed another 6-goal performance, and sophomore Ashley Forsberg scored her first goal of the tournament to give La Verne 7 total points. However, Villanova won 14-7.

Roberts concluded the tournament with 15 total goals. Aguayo finished with 5 total goals. Goalie Lauren Shepard tallied 31 saves in four games.

La Verne will head to the city of Orange to participate in the second Chapman Tournament this upcoming weekend, where they will take on Wheaton (Ill.), Chatham, Chapman and Carthage. The Leopards will begin tournament play at 11:00 am against Wheaton.
