Leopards Open Season With Chapman Tournament

The University of La Verne women's water polo team kicked off their 2010 season by participating in the Chapman Tournament last weekend, but came up empty, dropping games to Siena College (14-8), Concordia, Irvine (13-4), Grove City College (11-6), and Chapman University (20-10)

The Leopards started by taking on Siena and kept close early in the match, trailing 8-5 at the half. But La Verne scored just 3 goals in the final half, and fell in a 14-8 decision.

La Verne matched up against NAIA powerhouse Concordia in their second contest of the day. The Eagles rattled off 8 goals in the first quarter, giving them a comfortable cushion on their way to taking a 13-4 final.

On Sunday, the Leos faced Grove City in what would be their closest match of the tournament. The Leopards trailed by just three goals (9-6) at the end of the third period. But a scoreless fourth quarter led to a 11-6 defeat.

The Leopards concluded the tournament by taking on the hosting Panthers. La Verne trailed 9-5 at the break, and struggled in the third quarter, falling behind 14-6. Despite 4 final quarter goals, the Leopards dropped their final game 20-10.

Sophomore Liz Roberts led the Leopards in scoring with 12 goals over the weekend. Diane Aguayo and teammate Ashley Forsberg added 4 goals each.

La Verne will head out to Thousand Oaks this weekend to participate in the Cal Lutheran University Spring Classic, where they will face Fresno Pacific, Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State East Bay, and Villanova. The Leopards will start with a match against Fresno Pacific at 1:30pm on Saturday.
