Wheaton Outlasts Leopards
The University of La Verne women's water polo team took on
Wheaton College, but fell short in a 9-7 final Thursday afternoon
at the La Verne Aquatics Center.
Freshman Liz Roberts kicked off the action by scoring the first
goal, and added another in the second quarter. Ashley Forsberg
netted another score with four minutes left in the first half, and
La Verne took a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Diane Aquayo scored a quick goal just 30 seconds into the third
quarter, but Wheaton's Jessica McGee answered back to put the
Thunder on the board. Roberts earned her third goal of the match
and Melinda Fairman would add to the lead, putting La Verne up by
5. Wheaton would come back and score 7 unanswered goals before
Aquayo stopped the run with a goal late in the fourth quarter. But
it would not be enough, as the Thunder would score one last goal
and seal the game in a 9-7 finish.
Goalkeeper Lindsay Jones totaled 11 saves on the game, including
four big stops in the first half.
La Verne will take to the water again this weekend as they co-host
the Claremont Convergence where they will face Fresno Pacific,
Macalester, Washington & Jefferson, and Carthage College. The
Leopards first game will start at 11:40am at the La Verne Aquatics
Center.
