LA VERNE, Calif. — The Leopards hit an incredible .363 and the No. 15 University of La Verne volleyball team dominated Tuesday night, handing Chapman its first SCIAC loss of the year in a 3-0 sweep.
Set Scores: 25-16, 25-20, 25-18
Season Impact: The Leopards get to double-digit wins, improving to 10-2 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play. The Panthers fall to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
La Verne was led by Delaney Lynch and Katelyn Winiecki who both hit lights out in the match. Lynch finished with 12 kills on .647 hitting while Winiecki added eight kills with a .615 hitting percentage.
After La Verne jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening set, Chapman battled back to and 8-6 deficit. But the Leopards got momentum back on their side after a block by Kelsie Sievers and Alexia Balistreri sent La Verne on a 10-3 run. Marisa Rojo, Lynch and Winiecki each added three kills in the set.
It was more of the same from the Leopards in the second set with their hot hitting only getting better. Rojo put down five of her 10 kills in the set, helping La Verne take a 2-0 lead
The Panthers battled in the final set and got to within one point of the Leopards at 17-16. But a big block by Darrah Jones and Winiecki followed by an ace from Jones extended the lead to three, ending the Panthers' threat for good. Madison Maynes closed the game out with an ace to cap off the sweep.
Balistreri and Winiecki each finished the game five total blocks. Lynch and Sievers both added three blocks.
Next Game: The Leopards take the short trip down the road to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens this Friday, at 7:00 p.m.
