LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne volleyball team won its fifth straight SCIAC match by sweeping Caltech 25-6, 25-12, 25-10, on Friday night at Frantz Court.
How it happened: La Verne hit .382 as a team and limited Caltech to just six kills for the entire game.
All 16 dressed players stepped on the court for La Verne and the Leopards got contributions from everyone with at least a kill from 12 different players.
La Verne jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first set and never looked back. Brittany Yaxley was a perfect 7-for-7 in attack to lead the Leopards in the set.
Sets two and three started somewhat close but the Leopards went on big runs in each to put the match away. The Beavers got within 9-7 in the second set on a kill by Meghana Pagadala but La Verne unleashed an 8-0 run keyed by three Tiffany Mancuso service aces to put the set away.
During a stretch in the third set, Caltech took seven of eight points to slash a big early deficit to 12-9. This time, however, Monica Lopez served for 10 straight La Verne points—including four aces—to give a 23-9 lead to La Verne. The Leopards closed out the match on a kill by Flynn Salas-Miller and an ace by Tiffany Mancuso.
Players of the game: Kylie Cooke led all players with eight kills on .583 hitting. The freshman also had three service aces.
The setters duo of Mancuso and Kailey Faust combined four 27 assists and five aces. Faust added five digs.
What it means: With Cal Lutheran (11-1 SCIAC) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (11-2 SCIAC) also earning victories on the night, the SCIAC standings hold. La Verne (11-2 SCIAC) is in second place with the Athenas.
