Duron Named Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year

SKILLMAN, N.J. — A week after earning the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region Coach of the Year honors, La Verne tennis head coach Yolanda Duron was named the Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

"This is truly a team award and this award is for all the student-athletes on this team," Duron said. "They make me look good."

Duron led the program to its best year in school history this season. The Leopards achieved their highest ranking this season of No. 14 in the nation, with a 16-6 (8-3 SCIAC) record and made the NCAA National Championships for the first time in school history.

At the 2014 SCIAC Women's Tennis Championships, the Leopards upset No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer, 7-2, in the semifinal for their first win against the Sagehens since 1998 and advanced to the final. In the final, La Verne split the singles portion against No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and gave the national title contender all it could handle in a close 5-4 loss.

The Leopards also turned in stellar individual seasons. Under Duron's guidance, Andrea Madrigal won the 2013 United States Tennis Association (USTA)/ITA West Regional Singles Championship and competed at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships for the first time in program history. Madrigal was named the 2014 SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year.

Jeanette Losaria and Laina Matsuda went 14-7 on the season as La Verne's No. 1 doubles pair and became the first Leopard tandem to reach the final at the prestigious Ojai Tennis Tournament. Losaria is ranked 15th in the region in singles and Matsuda is right behind at No. 16. The duo is ranked 5th in doubles. Losaria was named First Team All-SCIAC and Matsuda earned Second Team honors.

The Leopards improved every season in the wins column in Duron's first five years at La Verne.

Duron is also highly involved in the community and is the director of La Verne's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
