SKILLMAN, N.J. — The University of La Verne tennis head coach Yolanda Duron was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region Head Coach of the Year on Wednesday. Assistant coach Amit Inbar was tabbed the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
La Verne has improved every season in the wins column in the first five seasons under Duron.
In 2014, Duron and Inbar led the Leopards to one of their best seasons ever. La Verne went 16-6 (8-3 SCIAC) on the year, achieved its highest national ranking ever at No. 14 and made the NCAA National Championships for the first time in school history.
At the 2014 SCIAC Women's Tennis Championships, the Leopards upset No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer, 7-2, in the semifinal for their first win against the Sagehens since 1998 and advanced to the final. In the final, La Verne split the singles portion against No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and gave the national title contender all it could handle in a close 5-4 loss.
The Leopards also had stellar individual season under the coaches' tutelage. Andrea Madrigal was named the SCIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year earlier this week after amassing an overall singles record of 18-2 during the regular season. In the fall she became the first Leopard ever to win the ITA West Regional Championships and earned All-America status. Madrigal is currently a second-ranked singles player in the West Region.
Jeanette Losaria and Laina Matsuda went 14-7 on the season as La Verne's No. 1 doubles pair and became the first Leopard tandem to reach the final at the prestigious Ojai Tennis Tournament. Losaria is ranked 15th in the region in singles and Matsuda is right behind at No. 16. The duo is ranked 5th in doubles. Losaria was named First Team All-SCIAC and Matsuda earned Second Team honors.
Madrigal was selected to compete in the 2014 NCAA Division III Individual Women's Championships on May 22-24 and Losaria/Matsuda were named doubles alternates in the West Region.Follow La Verne Athletics @ULV_Athletics Like La Verne Athletics on Facebook Sign up for our newsletter
