OJAI, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's tennis team added another first to its long list of achievements this weekend.
The doubles pair of Jeanette Losaria and Laina Matsuda became the first ever Leopard female tandem to reach the semifinals and the final of the prestigious Ojai Tournament, before falling just short against Kate Kousman and Caroline Ward of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to finish runner-up at historic Libbey Park.
After dropping the first set, 6-2, La Verne's No. 1 pair came back to take the second, 6-4. But Kuosman and Ward took control in the final set, claiming the set and the match with a 10-2 win.
Kousman/Ward and Losaria/Matsuda are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the West Region, respectively.
"Our goal was to play at the Ojai Athletic Club (site of semifinals)," La Verne head coach Yolanda Duron said. "Playing in the finals at Libbey Park is icing on the cake."
After a first round bye, Losaria/Matsuda beat Ariana Cobos/Alyssa Penner of Hope International without dropping a game in the round of 16, defeated Rebekah Kitto/Monica Li of Caltech in the quarterfinals (6-1, 6-0) and beat Lauren Stratman/Kate Stratman of Westmont (6-2, 6-4) in the semis to reach the finals.
Losaria and Matsuda had good showings in the singles tournament as well. Matsuda advanced all the way to quarterfinals before losing to Ward and Losaria reached the round of 16.
Etchegaray and Madrigal reached quarters as a doubles team.
