Leopards Break Into Regional Rankings

SKILLMAN, N.J. – Two University of La Verne tennis singles players and two doubles teams broke into the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III West Region rankings, which was released on Thursday. Andrea Madrigal, who was ranked second in the region in the preseason rankings, held her spot.

Madrigal is 10-1 in singles play so far with the lone loss coming from Melia Ferjanic of Trinity (Conn.).

Laina Matsuda checked in at No. 25 in individual rankings after starting the season 11-0 in singles play.

Jeanette Losaria is ranked 15th after going 6-5 against some of the best players in the country so far.

Doubles team of Losaria and Matsuda leaped into the No. 2 spot in the rankings after starting the season 9-2.

After an early season lineup reshuffle, the team of Madrigal and Bridget Etchegaray cracked into the doubles rankings at No. 11. The duo played its first match together against Mary Washington on March 4 and is undefeated so far, going 6-0.

As a team, La Verne ranks 4th in the region behind a trio of SCIAC schools. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is No. 1, followed by Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands.

The Leopards dropped one spot in the national rankings and is now at No. 15.

The Leopards return to the courts this afternoon when they travel to take on Whittier at 2 p.m.
