Madrigal competes in loaded field at USTA/ITA championships

FORT MYERS, FLA.- Sophomore Andrea Madrigal represented the University of La Verne women's tennis program at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships over the weekend. 

Madrigal opened play Thursday at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in the Division III singles bracket against Sonja Meighan of Washington and Lee (Va.), falling in two sets 6-2, 6-0.

She bounced back with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win Friday against Melissa Goodman of Emory (Ga.) to earn a spot in the fifth-place match. Madrigal faced off with Megan Humphreys of Wis.-Whitewater Saturday but lost 6-2, 6-2 to take sixth in the eight-player draw. All competitors were the winners of their regional championship tournament or at-large selections. 

"Andrea played well this weekend," said coach Yolanda Duron. "I'm really proud of her and looking forward to what she can do in the spring."

The Leo women's tennis squad opens up play in 2014 on Feb. 1. with a visit to UC-Santa Cruz.
