Matsuda Advances To Round of 16 At Ojai Tournament
Freshman Laina Matsuda highlighted action for the University of La Verne tennis team by registering a pair of wins in singles Thursday at the Ojai Valley Tournament on Thursday.
Matsuda began the tournament with a straight sets triumph over Hope International's Rebecca Roeser (6-3, 6-0).
In her second match of the day, Matsuda was extended to three sets before prevailing over UC Santa Cruz's Laura Wade. Matsuda claimed the opening set 6-3 before Wade reversed fortunes to win 6-3 in the second set. The tournament format then went to an extended tiebreaker in the third set, and Matsuda outlasted Wade 10-8 to advance to the Round of 16 which continues on Friday.
In doubles, the Leopard teams of Matsuda and Allison Moncrief along with Brooke Hines and Carly Tucker reached the Round of 32 before falling in their respective matches.
