Leopards Breeze Past Pacific Union In Home Opener
The University of La Verne women's basketball team made its 2009-10 home debut in victorious fashion with a 77-37 triumph over Pacific Union College Friday afternoon at Frantz Athletic Court.
The Leopards (2-0) pulled away from the Pioneers in the first half with a 23-1 run during a nine-minute span to turn an 11-9 edge into a comfortable 34-10 cushion with 4:40 remaining in the opening stanza. La Verne would take a 43-20 lead into intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Leopards built a 34-point at the midway point of the final period and didn't look back en route to a 40-point win.
La Verne shot 46% from the field and made 50% (12-24) of its shots from three-point range. The Leos held the Pioneers to 28.9% shooting from the field. Additionally, the Leopards enjoyed a solid 45-31 advantage in rebounding.
Clarissa Holz led the Leopards in scoring with 16 points in 23 minutes of action. Tedra Clark added 11 points, connecting on 3 of her 6 three-point attempts. Ashley Paul and Devon Michaels each contributed 8 points.
Teresa Fatai and Nicole Wandler each pulled down a team-high 7 rebounds while Mayra Duenas and Amanda Copas each dished out 5 assists.
La Verne will travel to St. Louis, Missouri for the McWilliams Classic Tournament held on the campus of Washington University. The Leopards will first play Rhodes College on Saturday, November 28.
