La Verne Falls To Cal Lu
The University of La Verne women's basketball looked to avenge
an earlier defeat to Cal Lutheran, but the SCIAC leading Regals
would earn a 75-43 win over the Leopards Saturday at Gilbert Arena
in Thousand Oaks.
La Verne struggled all night from the field, shooting 29.4%
(15-of-51) and 13% (3-of-23) from behind the arc. Cal Lutheran
started slow, but heated up in the second half to finish the game
shooting 50% (27-of-54). The Regals earned nearly 20 points at the
free throw line, shooting 76% (19-of-25) from the charity stripe.
Cal Lu also held a commanding 47-24 rebounding advantage, pulling
down 15 offensive rebounds.
The Regals focused on getting the ball to the middle, scoring 40
points in the paint compared to 14 by La Verne. Their agressive
game plan paid off, as Cal Lu converted 12-of-15 (80%) from the
line in the first half.
The Leopards were able to jump out to a 8-6 advantage at the 14:35
mark, but that lead would be short-lived. The Regals embarked on a
23-6 run to grab a 29-12 lead. La Verne ended the half on a 7-1 run
to trail 30-19 at the break.
The second half was dominated by Cal Lutheran, as they scored 45
points on 64.3% (18-of-28) shooting from the field. La Verne tried
to keep themselves in the game at the free throw line, hitting
9-of-10 (90%) of their shots, but continuted to struggle from the
field, converting 28.6% (7-of-23) of their attempts and making just
one three-pointer.
Ashley Paul, Clarissa Holz and Amanda Copas each finished with 7
points and combining for 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Freshman Starla
Wright led the Regals with 17 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
Danika Briggs and Channing Fleischmann scored 10 each.
After going 2-2 in a four-game road stint, La Verne will return to
Frantz Athletic Court next Thursday to take on Whittier
College. La Verne will also begin what will be a three-day
promotion of the Pink Zone Campaign, the WBCA's breast cancer
awareness program, by selling shirts during the 7:30 pm home game.
