Leopard Offensive Struggles Continue Against Tigers

The University of La Verne women's basketball team suffered a 76-41 defeat against Occidental College in SCIAC Thursday night at Rush Gymnasium in Eagle Rock.

The Leopards lost by their largest deficit of the year after shooting a season low 23.8% (15-63) from the field and just 15.8% (3-19) from three point range. The Tigers conversely had the hot hand, shooting 57.1% (28-49) on the night.

Leopard guard Amanda Copas scored the first points of the game, giving La Verne its only lead of the night. Stephanie Babij helped Oxy find its rhythm by scoring 10 points in the opening 20 minutes.  Despite 10 offensive rebounds by La Verne, the Tigers would take a 36-19 lead heading into halftime.

La Verne missed all seven of its three-point attempts in the second half, and Occidental blew open the lead, finishing the contest on a 26-7 run to take a 76-41 victory.

Forward Clarissa Holz led the Leopards with 10 points, while Mayra Duenas and Corinne Watkins combined for 15 points and 16 rebounds. Babij led all scorers with 16 points. Katelyn Rowe added 9 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks off the bench.

The Leopards will return to Frantz Athletic Court for their final game of the season against Caltech on Saturday night, recognizing seniors Watkins and Tedra Clark. Tip off begins at 5 pm.
