Leos Compete Against Cal Lu in SCIAC Action
La Verne's Swim and Dive team hosted the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen and Regals on Saturday. Despite a great effort by the Leos, they would fall to Cal Lu 164-68 for the women, and 148-85 for the men.
The big winners for the Leopards today were Marc Okimura and Shane Hurter who won all three of their events. Okimura took first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.41) and the 100-yard breaststroke (59.73). Hurter placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.09) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.26). Okimura and Hurter along with Matt Johnson and Andrew McKay dominated in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.48.
On the women's side Maddie Lovrensky led off the women's 200-yard medley relay that finished second (2:02.77). She also came back to win both the 50-yard freestyle (25.49) and 100-yard backstroke (1:01.65).
Also contributing to the La Verne points was Shelby Broyles who continued to be a factor in the distance events with a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:48.84) and a third place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.52). Terrah Carroll scored her first big points of the season, finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.86) and third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.39).
Matt Johnson came back after a great 200-yard medley relay split to score second place in the 100-yard butterfly (57.60). Melissa Dooley continues to improve this season finishing second on 3-meter dive (121.60) and third on 1-meter dive (114.65).
"The team continues to grow and get faster; to come back a second day and swim even better was exciting," said head coach Pat Skehan. "It is another big step forward for us."
The Leopards will be back in action on Saturday, January 7th where they will head to Los Angeles for a meet against the Occidental Tigers.
