Softball Debuts With Doubleheader Sweep

The University of La Verne softball team made its 2010 debut with a pair of wins over Pomona-Pitzer by scores of 5-3 and 7-5 in SCIAC action Saturday in Claremont.

The Leopards needed to rally in both games against the Sagehens as they came back from deficits of 2-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the nightcap to claim a doubleheader sweep.

In the second contest, La Verne broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the sixth as Lissa Ishihara hit a 2-run single to score Mandy Brenner and Daryn Schively.  The Leopards would add another run to take a 7-4 lead.

Freshman Brittany Flores earned her first career victory in relief, pitching the final 5 1/3 innings.  A solo homer from the Sagehens in the top of the seventh was the only earned run yielded by Flores, who struck out 5 batters.

Pomona-Pitzer tallied four runs in the top of the second on 2 hits, 4 walks and a wild pitch to take a 4-1 lead.  The Leopards responded with a 2-run single from Tara Allis to score Melissa Carlson and Kaitlyn Ward to cut the margin to 4-3.

Carlson and Kailee Munden each went 2-3 with Carlson scoring 3 runs.  Ishihara finished the game with 3 RBI.

In the opener, the Leopards plated a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to rally past the Sagehens.  In the fifth, Ishihara and Allis smacked RBI singles to give La Verne a 3-2 lead.  After the Hens tied the game in the top of the sixth, the Leos responded as Brenner scored on a wild pitch followed by and RBI single from Carlson, who went 2-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.  Ishihara went 2-4 with an RBI.

Starting pitcher Delaney Baylor picked up the win with 8 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched.  Brianna Hogg closed out the Sagehens with a scoreless seventh.

La Verne continues action on Sunday with a visit from Pacific Lutheran of the Northwest Conference.  The doubleheader begins at noon at Pomona-Pitzer.
