Men's Cross Country Post Several Personal Bests at UCI Invite
The University of La Verne men's cross country team competed at the Asics/UC Irvine Invitational, placing fourth overall in the team standings in the Race B session held Saturday at the Anteater Recreation Fields on the UC Irvine campus.
Overall, La Verne enjoyed a productive day despite a delay due to lightning during the morning hours. Of the 12 Leopard participants, 7 registered personal bests at the meet.
Competing in a field of 143 runners consisting of Division II, III, NAIA and junior college participants, La Verne finished with a team total of 121 to place behind Cal Baptist (33), Central Arizona (64) and Occidental (76). The Leos concluded action with a total time of 2:15:11.10 for an average of 27:02.22.
The Leopards placed four runners among the Top 40 finishers, led by Alex Forbess who led the Leopard contingent for a second consecutive week with a 16th place finish in a time of 26:18.1. Matthew Sustayta finished 19th overall, completing the eight kilometer course in 26;40.0. Additionally, Chris Gutierrez finished 37th with a time of 27:13.9 while sophomore AJ Licon made his 2011 debut with a 40th place performance in 27:19.3.
La Verne was also supported by the trio of Ted Breslow (57th), Eric Espinoza (66th) and Alberto Acosta (69th), each of whom finished among the top 70 competitors. Breslow was the top freshman competitor for the Leos with a time of 27:40.2 to record a 31-second personal best.
The Leos will return to action when they take part in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday, October 1.
