Leopards Place 7th Overall At West Region Preview

The University of La Verne men's cross country team competed in the West Region Preview Saturday in Claremont, placing seventh out of the 11 participating schools, and fifth among SCIAC teams.

Division I entrant UC Irvine took the team title with 24 points followed by meet host Pomona-Pitzer (52), Occidental (115), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (126) and Redlands (146) to round out the Top 5.

La Verne totaled 193 points to edge out conference foes Cal Lutheran (196) and Whittier (204) after a highly-competitive battle between the three schools throughout the race.  Caltech (250) and Chapman (322) placed 10th and 11th, respectively.

Matt Sustayta was the top Leopard finisher, completing the 8-kilometer course in 27:45 to place 40th overall.  Leo Martinez was not far behind, placing 43rd in 27:53 while Oscar Castro was 48th in 28:05.  Jasper Chang finished 51st (28:08) with Sean Krusick placing 57th (28:12).

The Leopards return to competitive action on Oct. 17 as they take part in the SCIAC Multi-Dual in La Mirada.
