Men's cross country finishes 3-4 at SCIAC Multi-Dual
The La Verne's men's cross country team competed in the SCIAC Multi-Dual at La Mirada on Saturday, finishing with a 3-4 mark against conference foes. The Leopards beat out Cal Lutheran, Caltech and Whittier College.
Claremont Mudd-Scripps (7-0) came out on top as four Stag runners finished within the top five. Pomona-Pitzer (6-1) placed second, followed by Occidental (5-2) and Redlands (4-3).
La Verne battled Redlands throughout the competition, falling just three points behind the Bulldogs (30-27). The Leopards topped the Kingsmen 25-34, along with defeating the Poets (21-38) and Beavers (24-37).
"Our training is coming along nicely, and we are improving more than any other team in the SCIAC," said head coach Mike Atwood. "Though we wanted to finish in a higher position, I believed we've proven we can be competitive within the conference."
Sophomore Leo Martinez led the Leopard contingent by placing 26th overall with a time of 28:37.79. Following close behind Martinez were Sean Kusick who placed 33rd (29:06.39), and Jasper Chang who placed 36th (29:28.28). Freshman Oscar Castro finished 40th (29:40.62).
The Multi-Duals count towards the overall conference standings. La Verne will look to improve its position in two weeks at the SCIAC Championships, held Oct. 31 at the Prado Park in Chino.
