Golf Gears Up For NCAA Championships
Two weeks removed from winning its fourth consecutive SCIAC title, the University of La Verne golf team takes aim at this week's NCAA Championships, beginning at the Hershey Links and Hershey Country Club, in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
La Verne finished second overall at last season's NCAA Championships and have claimed the runner-up spot two of the past three years (2007, 2009).
Senior Mitch Fedorka and junior Eric Bunge have been the primary catalysts for the Leopards this season. "Mitch and Eric have been models for consistency the entire year," said first-year head coach Eric Riehle. "They lead on the golf course and in practice and provide great assistance in elevating the play of the rest of the team." The duo will be joined at the NCAA Championships by Adam Hancock, Keven Holliday and Kevin Smith.
The Leopards are currently ranked #10 in Golfstat.com Division III Poll and are #12 in the Golfworld/Nike Golf Top 25 Poll.
La Verne reached the NCAAs by virtue of winning the SCIAC crown, claiming the SCIAC 36-hole championship by two strokes over the University of Redlands back on April 26. The Leopards were in third place in the conference team standings heading into the final tournament, but shot a collective 586 to earn victory and claim a fourth consecutive conference title.
The championships will be hosted by Elizabethtown College.
