Leopard Golf Places 5th At Gordin Classic

The University of La Verne golf team recently finished in fifth place overall at the Gordin Collegiate Classic held October 3-6 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C.

The Leopards shot a combined 936 for the three-round tournament.  Methodist University won with a total of 880 followed by Huntingdon College (911), Skidmore (912), Oglethorpe University (918) and La Verne to round out the top five.

Senior Mitch Fedorka enjoyed the highest placing among the La Verne contingent with a three-round total of 230 (+14) to tie for 22nd place among the individual leaders in a field that also included several Division I competitors.   Eric Bunge tied for 30th at 232 (+16).  Other Leopard competitors included Kevin Smith (T-40th, 235), Kevin Holliday (T-53rd, 243) and Ryan Waring (T-60th, 247).

"Overall I was pleased with how our team performed and know that we gained a great deal of experience from the tournament," said Leopard head coach Eric Riehle. "Each of of the teams we faced at this event have already played three our four tournaments coming into this big week.  This was our first and only event in the fall and it showed a bit at times.  Given those circumstances it was a great experience for our players to face some of the top teams at the Division III level."

The Gordin Collegiate Classic annually matches the best NCAA Division III golf teams in one of the nation's most prestigious small college tournaments.  The invitations are earned by teams who finish in the Top 11 at the previous year's NCAA Division III Golf Championships.
