Start Time For Season Opener Moved To 11:30 AM
The University of La Verne's 2009 football opener against Whitworth University will feature a rare morning start as the Leopards and visiting Pirates are slated for an 11:30 am kickoff at Ortmayer Stadium on September 12.
The brunch-time kickoff - scheduled 90 minutes earlier than the Leopards' customary 1 pm start - was made to better accomodate Whitworth's post-game travel arrangements. La Verne faced a similar situation prior to last season's opener against the Pirates in Spokane, Washington on September 13, 2008, forcing a switch from 1 pm to 12 noon.
"It's the unique nature of travel within the scope of Division III," said La Verne head coach Andy Ankeny, who enters his third season at the helm of the Leopard program. "Whitworth was extremely gracious in helping us deal with our travel needs last year and we are more than happy to return the favor this season."
The opener against Whitworth serves as the Leopards' only home game during the month of September. La Verne's next home football contest will be October 10 against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps before closing the regular season with three consecutive home games against Whittier (Oct. 31), Cal Lutheran (Nov. 7) and Chapman (Nov. 14).
