La Verne Entertains Whitworth In Home Opener
University of La Verne begins its home portion of the 2007 schedule with its second straight meeting with a member of the Northwest Conference as ULV entertains Whitworth University Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium.
The Pirates (0-1) dropped a 24-12 season-opening loss a week ago at home to SCIAC member University of Redlands. The Leopards (0-1) are looking to improve on last week's outcome after a 21-7 loss at University of Puget Sound. Saturday will mark the fourth meeting between the schools.
La Verne spotted Puget Sound 21 points before finally getting on the board in the second half when Leopard quarterback Troy Doolittle found Michael Moreno from three yards out to put the Leopards on the board and cut the Logger lead to 14 points at 21-7. Doolittle finished the game 21-of-33 through the air for 148 yards. Charles Lacy was the team's leading receiver with 56 yards while Chris Lara rushed for a team-high 40 yards. The Leopards finished with 210 total yards on offense against UPS.
Whitworth quarterback Kory Kemp had a solid outing in his first collegiate start. He ran 67 yards for a touchdown on Whitworth's third play from scrimmage against Redlands and finished with 97 yards rushing on eight carries. Kemp also completed 18 of 42 passes for 172 yards with an interception. The Pirates finished with 162 rushing yards on 37 attempts. Adam Anderson rushing 17 times for 48 yards.
Whitworth has won each of the previous three meetings, including a 37-16 triumph over the Leopards last season in Spokane.
Kickoff is 1 pm.
