The University of La Verne moved a step closer to earning a spot in the SCIAC Tournament with a 3-1 triumph over Pomona-Pitzer Tuesday at Frantz Athletic Court.
Set scores were 25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 25-16.
With the win the Leos improved to 18-12 overall and 8-4 in conference play. Pomona-Pitzer suffered its fourth consecutive loss in dropping to 12-13 and 6-6, respectively.
The Leopards avenged an earlier defeat to the Sagehens to remain in third place in the conference standings. The Leos can clinch a spot in the conference tournament with a win in one of their two remaining contests.
La Verne held on to prevail in the opening two sets before the Hens fought off the sweep with a third set win. The Leopards would respond by pulling away in the fourth set, winning 7 of the final 9 points.
Crista Jones recorded a match-high 19 kills, moving into second place on the school career chart during the rally scoring era (2001-present) with 1,289 to move ahead of former teammate Brianna Gonzales (2005-08). Jones is 12 kills away from moving into the top spot, trailing only Amy Kratochvil (2001-2004) who recorded 1,300 for her career.
The duo of Anna Calmer and Randi Toomay notched 14 kills each while Chelsea Sleight registered a match-high 24 digs. Pomona-Pitzer's Sara Amos and Eleanor Hughes each collected 14 kills in the loss.
La Verne continues action this week with a road contest against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday at 7:30 pm.
