Leopards Place Four On All-SCIAC Team

Four members of the University of La Verne football team were named to the 2009 All-SCIAC squad announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Leopard defensive lineman Jorge Villagomez earned a selection on the First Team while wide receiver Cedric Ho, linebacker Branamier Courtney and offensive lineman Kyle Appleford each earned Second Team honors.
Additionally, Ho was named the SCIAC's Newcomer of the Year.
"Each of the young men who received All-SCIAC accolades were very deserving," said third-year head coach Andy Ankeny. "They were definitely the cornerstones of our football game and helped lay the groundwork for the future."
A junior from San Gabriel, Ho was the primary receiving option in his first season with the Leopards and made an immediate impact, establishing a single-season school record in receptions with 81. He also totaled team highs in both receiving yards (894) and touchdowns (8). He also amassed at least 100 receiving yards and a touchdown in five consecutive games.
A junior from Pomona, Villagomez anchored the Leopard defensive line and registered 31 tackles on the year including 16 solo and 15 assisted stops. He also recorded 2 sacks.
Appleford was a stalwart up front for the Leopards, consistently grading out the highest among the La Verne offensive linemen. The sophomore from Brea provided excellent coverage for the La Verne en route to earning his first all-conference nod.
A senior from Victorville, Courtney led the SCIAC in tackles with 87 stops in his final season. He also collected 2 sacks and an interception. Courtney's standout 2009 campaign concludes a stellar career in earning his second selection on the All-SCIAC team after garnering Second Team honors as a sophomore in 2007.
