Leopards Entertain Willamette In Home Opener

Leopard head coach Andy Ankeny

The University of La Verne resumes action this weekend as it hosts the Willamette Bearcats in a contest marking the first-ever meeting in football between the schools.  The game also serves as the 2008 home opener for the Leopards.

Willamette has moved into the D3Football.com Poll at #25 in the nation. This week's poll was released on Sunday, Sept 21, following it's 31-23 victory over Southern Oregon University.  This is Willamette’s second trip to California this season, having defeated SCIAC foe Cal Lutheran 31-17 in Thousand Oaks on Sept. 13.  The Bearcats are currently the only Northwest Conference team ranked in the Top 25 Poll.  Willamette has scored more than 30 points in every game so far this season.

The Leopards dropped a 22-13 decision to defending Northwest Conference champion Whitworth University (Sept. 13) in Spokane, Wash.  Quarterback Anthony Andre amassed 175 yards and two touchdowns through the air in his Leopard debut.  His top target was senior wideout Phi Van Le, who caught eight passes for 58 yards.  Defensively, senior linebacker Jason Carpenter, a 2007 Second Team All-SCIAC selection, collected a game-high 16 tackles against the Pirates including one sack.

Kickoff for Saturday's game is 1 pm.
