Football Announces 2009 Schedule

The 2009 University of La Verne football
schedule features five home games at Ortmayer Stadium, including
three consecutive home games to end the regular season.
La Verne plays two of its three non-conference games against
Northwest Conference opponents. The Leopards open the 2009 campaign
at home against Whitworth University on Sept. 12. After a bye week
the Leopards travel to Salem, Oregon to face 2008 NWC Champion
Willamette University on Sept. 26.
The Leopards will begin SCIAC competition on Oct. 3 at Redlands
before returning home a week later against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
(Oct. 10). La Verne hits the road for consecutive road tilts at
Pomona-Pitzer (Oct. 17) and Occidental (Oct. 24).
The Leos host Whittier on Oct. 31 for the first of three straight
home games. Homecoming is scheduled the following week on Nov. 7
when Cal Lutheran pays a visit to Ortmayer Stadium for the final
SCIAC contest of the season.
La Verne hosts non-league rival Chapman on Nov. 14 in the 2009
regular season finale.
“I’m very excited about the upcoming football
season,” said head coach Andy Ankeny, who begins his third
season at the helm of the Leopard program. “Our schedule
allows us the opportunity to match up with some of the top programs
on the West Coast. As we continue to grow as a program we need this
type of schedule each year to challenge us.”
In 2008 the Leopards concluded the season with a fourth-place
finish in the SCIAC standings, earning league wins over
Pomona-Pitzer and Whittier.
Currently the La Verne football team is in the midst of its spring practice period in preparation of the upcoming season. Coach Ankeny is encouraged by what he has seen during the spring and believes the strong momentum will continue heading into the fall schedule.
"Spring ball is definitely off to a great start,” Ankeny said. “Our players are getting after it and we are enjoying this particular time spent as a unit."
