FOOTBALL: La Verne Secures Road Triumph At Whittier

The University of La Verne football team struck early against Whittier, claiming a 14-0 first-half advantage and held on for a 24-21 road triumph over the Poets in SCIAC action in Whittier.
La Verne (2-5, 2-3 SCIAC) got on the board with a lengthy 15-play, 97-yard scoring drive capped off by a Jacob Tobias 1-yard TD run late in the first quarter. La Verne grabbed a two-touchdown lead when Anthony Andre ran in from 2 yards out early in the second quarter.
Tobias, who rushed for 70 yards on the night, would score his second touchdown early in the fourth quarter-again from a yard out- to stake the Leopards to a 21-7 advantage. A Wesley Dean field goal from 32 yards out gave La Verne a 24-13 advantage before the Poets scored a touchdown with two minutes remaining in the contest.
La Verne was efficient from the red zone, scoring on each of its four trips inside the 20-yard line. Whittier was 3-of-6 in red zone opportunities. The Leopards amassed 401 total yards on offense, including 259 passing yards from Andre, who completed 24 of 38 attempts. Phi Van Le caught four passes for 88 yards as La Verne earned its first road win in two seasons.
The Leopards continue on the road next week as they travel to Thousand Oaks to face Cal Lutheran next Saturday to mark the final conference game of the season.
