LA VERNE, CA — Christopher Peres led the Leopards with four RBI and the University of La Verne baseball team scored a weekend sweep against the visiting Lewis and Clark Pioneers.
With the wins, the Leopards improve to 17-8 overall. The Pioneers fall to 7-21.
Game One: La Verne 9, Lewis and Clark 4
The Leopards used a big fourth inning to surge ahead of the Pioneers in game one.
Peres went 3-4 at the plate with three RBI, a run, and a walk. Catcher Adam Santa Cruz added a pair of hits, two runs, and a walk.
La Verne scored seven runs in the fourth highlighted by RBI singles by Peres, Drew Reddick, and Tanner Siffert and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Shiota. The Leopards also took advantage of a pair of Pioneers errors to score three more runs.
Devon Burhans picked up his fourth win of the season, going five innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Jordan Gonzalez took the loss for Lewis and Clark.
Game Two: La Verne 12, Lewis and Clark 0
The Leopards used twelve hits to score a big win against the Pioneers on Saturday.
Alfredo Frey pitched six innings in his start, striking out four with just four hits and one walk to add his third win of the season.
Santa Cruz and Christopher Ligot both finished with a pair of RBI. Ligot went 3-4 with a walk.
Shiota went 2-4 at the plate with three runs, an RBI, and a walk. Jacob Benson added two hits, an RBI, three runs, and two walks.
Leading 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Leopards added four more runs off doubles by Shiota and Ligot and a two-run homer by Santa Cruz.
La Verne added four more runs in the eighth to seal the win.
The Leopards return to SCIAC action for a big series against No. 10 Cal Lutheran.
