In the second game of the three-game series, the University of La Verne baseball team rebounded from Friday night's defeat to capture a 4-3 win over Whittier College in SCIAC action on Saturday afternoon in Whittier.
The Leopards offense was led by Bryce Roenicke's two RBI single through the right side in the top of the third inning.
La Verne (18-10, 13-4 SCIAC) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. George Hanna got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a ground out. Jacob Ludvik singled up the middle, putting runners on first and third. Cody Hazel followed with another single to score Hanna for the 1-0 Leopard advantage.
The Leos would strike again in the third inning when Mason Stoltenberg led off with a single to center field. Back-to-back errors by the Poets would allow La Verne to score its first run of the inning. With runners on second and third, Roenicke's single would score the final two runs of the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Whittier (13-14, 7-10 SCIAC) got on the board in the bottom of the inning scoring three runs to cut their deficit down to a single run. The Poets capitalized on two Leopard errors to score their first two runs. Josh Genzuk's single to center field scored the third run. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, resulting in a 4-3 Leopard victory.
Jason Moralez was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and one run scored. Roenicke was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Starting pitcher Nathan Rollon earned his fifth win this season. Ross Hebert picked up the save, after coming in to pitch in the final inning of the game.
La Verne will conclude the three-game set against the Whittier Poets tomorrow at noon in Whittier.
