Leopard Squads Prep For Regular Season

With their respective season openers days away, fall sport teams at the University of La Verne are in the midst of their preseason camps as they ready themselves for the upcoming regular season.

Football welcomed around 120 athletes for camp, which began on Monday.  Under the direction of second-year head coach Chris Krich, the Leo football squad will have nearly a month to prepare before opening the regular season at home on September 15 against Whitworth in the first-ever night game at Ortmayer Stadium.

The Leopard volleyball team opened camp with 18 players which include 10 newcomers. La Verne begins its 2012 season on Aug. 31 as co-host of the two-day Pacific Coast Classic.  The Leos will face a pair of nationally-ranked teams in the tournament in No. 14 Colorado College and No. 16 UMass Boston.

Men’s soccer opened practice on August 19 as it gears up for its opening weekend of competition in New York.  La Verne will take part in the Lotto Classic Tournament (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) for weekend games against host Clarkson and St. Lawrence University.

First-year head coach Antoinette Love has guided the women’s soccer team through its first week of practices.  The Leos debut at home on Sunday, September 2 when it hosts Mills College. 

Men’s water polo commenced action this week with 24 players under the direction of head coach Alex La.  La Verne opens play Labor Day weekend with a pair of games against Division I opponents before returning home the following weekend to co-host the annual Inland Empire Classic.

La Verne cross country also opened fall practices with high expectations for both the men’s and women’s teams under head coach Mike Atwood.  The Leos begin the season at the Mark Covert Invitational in Fullerton on September 1.
